I went to China last summer for a month. Didn't go to Shenyang, but I was in both Beijing and Shanghai. These are two very different cities. Shanghai is more modern, touristy place with lots of cool architecture (Jin Mao Tower)One tourist place is called Nanjing Lu(Lu means street). Beijing on the other hand has much fewer neon lights and is way closer to where you will be (I assume you will be flying once inside China?).
I would recommend Beijing to see Tienanmen Square, Not too far from the Great Wall, Emperors Palace, CCTV Tower (good view like Seattle Space Needle). Also Beijing has many markets where you can get cheap clothing that looks good and holds up(you can bargain so don't take the offering price). Next time I am there I will bring an empty suitcase! Also in Bejing there are lots of cheap eats. Dang I wish I could go back! Maybe after I graduate....
Have Fun,
Rob Sturtz
PS- the alcohol they are talking about is called baijiu (pronounced buy-joe, means "white alcohol")
