and unfortunately with liberalization comes common street crimes as well. I don't know what type of hotel you are staying, beware of women calling up or knocking at your door.
If your Chinese host(s) has organized all your activities, then by all means follow them. If you have free time on your own, then take the usual precautions just as you would in other big cities.
If you want western food, go to a major hotel, you won't be disappointed, especially in Peking and Shanghai. Yes, you can do McDonold or Burger King, remember they use local suppliers. No, the patties aren't dog meat but they do taste different, as a Big Mac tastes different in some European countries.
If you want to get a taste of some exotic animals, ask your Chinese hosts. However, I would warn against such as variants of SARS still exist in many of these animals.
