I use 205/55/16 Blizzak LM-22s on steel wheels my 2001 Audi A4 Avant Quattro in the winter and I love em. And these are the "new" models I think you were referring too that supposedly will remain a winter tire for their entire life. I can't speak for the life span as I've only had em on for 5,000 miles of winter driving, but they look barely worn if that helps.
As far as my driving conditions go, I live in SF, and put them on for the winter--and my winter driving consists mostly of trips to Lake Tahoe and they have been absolutely great for my driving needs--though I have never had any other winter tires on this car, so I can't give a full comparison. In addition to light & heavy snow/slush/ice they are also quite good in the dry/rain and felt solid on the highway--I think 90 is the fastest I've had them up to. I think they were built for a more "european driving style" meaning they give up a slight bit of serious ice/snow traction for the ability to keep great dry/wet highway driving handling...although I've never had any traction problems even in very bad storms/ice. They're maybe just the slightest bit noiseier than the OE Goodyear RSA Eagles.
So, in conclusion, I highly reccommend the Blizzak LM-22s. Slightly pricier than some snow tires-I think I paid $120 each but so far I think they're worth it for the great traction whatever the conditions and the expected (that so far I have no reason to doubt) long life.
