My son uses Tannoy "Near-field Monitors" with his PC. But realize his PC is a Carillon audio computer (rack mount, mega fast, super silent) and not the typical noisy plastic tower.
The audio signal leaves the PC, is routed through a Berringer mixer (used in place of a pre-amp), a Crown XLS amplifier (also rack mount), then out to his Tannoys.
The set-up is a basic home recording studio (he is a Music Enginering grad from Univ of Miami - go 'Canes!) which explains some of the specialized gear. If I understand the concept correctly, near-field monitors are designed to accurately reproduce sound with a listening distance better measured in inches than feet. Probably the same thing you would want with computer speakers.
But also consider the quality of the sound source. MP3's are crap from a sound/music perspective. If that is what you are listening to, save your money.
