exhaust tunnel is smaller then most driveshafts... The exhaust tunnel doesn't have to be as big as the tunnel for 'traditional' RWD driveshafts.
My former BMW 2002tii & Datsun 510 before that both had independant rear suspensions. Similar to the exhaust, they didn't need a real big tunnel because the driveshaft didn't have to follow the unsprung assemblies.
