Saabs used to have flat floors and also lots of space for feet in the front.
The exhaust went along the side where Saab had that unique sill system with sills in the door. This was a strong structure as proven in rallies.
The 9000 has a big central tunnel with adequate foot space but the 9-5 is cramped for foot space - try driving one with boots on.
I assume the cramped space is to protect legs in a crash and joins the abandonment of the wagon rear facing third seat (in the original 95 not on the 9-5 wagon) and of the lens wipers (can catch pedestrians) in the interest of reducing injuries in accidents.
Sadly it doesn't make for a better driving experience.
