NY state uses the point system, which remain for a certain period of time, I think around 5 years, but not sure. A higher speed over the limit will result a higher point. And, there is a point limit where your license can get suspended. I believe the points you acquire goes on you driving history in DMV, which you can purchase a copy. I think insuracne company can check that history.
OTOH, in Iowa, there's no point system. So, I don't know how they keep track of violations, but they also have history report, so I assume they somehow keep track of you. But, it's not as detrimental as the point system.
Where are you located? You should check with your state DMV. Call them and ask or go to their website.
