the major corporations, i.e. State Farm, Allstate, etc. They have large staffs devoted to rate setting, typically based on their experience with similar variables such as drivers' age, sex, zip code, car model, driving record, collision payouts, etc. Some companies have gone further and will pull your credit record, which has 333 variables - fairly accurate descriptors of your financial behavior - which can get extrapolated to many other personal behaviors. By the way, the US Fair Credit Reporting Act allows use of credit records as the basis of extending credit OR INSURANCE. Rate setting is far from arbitrary, but does differ by company.

I don't want to give you erroneous information that causes problems, and I no longer work in the insurance industry (a brief stint), but your agent probably wants to keep your family's business. As such, he should do what he can to make sure that your parents are not shocked enough by a large rate increase (due to your ticket) to start shopping around for another insurance carrier, which may cost him the easy commissions he has enjoyed for years while doing very little work. Personally, I would give him a call to get his opinon, and be straight with him. I don't believe that it is in his interest to "rat" on you to the parent company - but you may want to ask up front!

Again, I am not up on your local law, but in Illinois a 35-over-the-limit ticket is a very serious offense, something that you MUST have a lawyer for, and it may be covered by some membership benefits. Don't be cheap/stupid on this.

And if you do go to court, please dress appropriately: coat and tie, no exceptions. In my last court appearance, I was up after a guy in for DUI - he showed up to court wearing a Budwiser T-shirt! How do you think the judge reacted to this?
