Advice on buying a car (not a Saab, though...)

It is possible that I can come to the States for 6 months to do my thesis. Some things are still to be defined, but probabilities are good so far. I should leave from Italy on March, and come back on September. I'm staying at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the land of Nascar Racing, and, by the way, I would be happy to meet and have a beer with any Saaber in the zone when I'm there.
I'm writing this post to ask an advice about buying a car for that period. I have a tiny budget, around 2000$, but I have no request about look, appareance and style. I just need a "mule", something to cruise around in without technical problems. I'll have no time and no tools to wrench around in the campus like I do now on my 9k, I'll be there just to do my thesis, I'll have no time to spend on a car. I think this sadly puts out of the contest any Saab, because any old 9k or C900 would need too many attentions, and any more recent is out of my budget. I'd like to have an American car, because owning a Buick for example is an experience I could never do here in Italy, but I would buy a Japanese car too. What car id your advice on? Also, do you advice to buy from a used cars dealer of from a private seller?
Also, please could somebody help me to figure out all the costs I will be facing, besides the cost of the car itself of course? I mean, do I have to buy new plates for example, or pay registration or value fees, or change of keeper? or anything else? and how much? What kind of expense do I have to expect for the insurance too? Are there any insurance companies better than others for such a short term insurance, to a foreign customer?
Sorry for the long post and for such many questions.
Any comments wil be useful.
