I cannot recommend and American car for I have never owned one , but you could probably find a 6 cylinder Mustang beater for around that price, that would be an American "experience". Hondas are the reliable choice. I owned a Civic for 10 yrs and it was the most reliable car ive ever owned, fun in its own way too. Purchasing from used lots is incredibly easy here, they will do all the paper work for you, usually at no extra charge. Basically you hand over the money and sign some papers and they hand you the key. I dont know how compicated insurance will be due to your non-citizen status though. I would look for lots that stay with just a few makes and models, or better yet, one make only. I am a bit leery of lots with 15 or 20 different makes and models, it says that they just want to sell everything and anything without knowledge or preparation of the cars beforehand. Those that specialize or stay with one or two makes usually do so for a reason, they like that make and will boast about its good qualities therefore they know more about it and what to look for problem wise etc. Dont be swayed too much by warrantys and extended service plans ...usually more problems than thier worth. Good luck.
