partition your hard drive in two. A small partition (let say 1GB) containing OS9 and your OS9 applications and the remaining partition will have OS X. It's what I did. OS9 is pretty fast on my digital audio G4. You can force OS9 at startup, you have to press on the option key when you are starting the computer and your two partitions will be there.
But I've heard that the newer tower cannot boot OS9, something about a new ROM software, I don't know about the powerbook. In any case, Classic (OS9 from within OS X) will OK for most of your software.
