in retrospect I should have waited a month and bought one of the new ibooks that was recently released. They have the same processor, screen etc but are cheaper. I'm happy with the size of the powerbook, but envy the backlit keyboard that the ibooks have. Most of my work is scientific - coding, document preparation, editing images with Adobe Illustrator etc. I havn't had any major disappointments with the speed (it responds much better than the old 300MHz G3 I used to run X on). If I have a perl job that takes 30 minutes to run I'll just queue it to run on a workstation at school. I don't do any serious computation with the powerbook.
I've watched a number of DVD's on the machine with my wife - in that it does a very nice job. My wife also made a few movies with iMovie. She was happy with the results. I certainly prefer the machine to the other options I have for workstations (either windows box or a Dell laptop running leenux). Its certainly more stable that any windows experience I've ever had, and I don't have to dick around with options like I remember doing with linux.
sitting in coffeeshops and doing the wifi thing is also fun.
