The Saab 9-5, sedan or Wagon, will stop, corner and brake better than a SUV wet, dry, ice or snow.
In many cases, folks with Saabs who have snow tires, find that they are more mobile than SUVs in the snow. Tires are that important. The 9-5 has traction control. When one front wheel is on ice and the other has better traction, the system applies the brake at the wheel that is spinning to allow the one with traction to do what it can. Otherwise a differential will allow the wheel with the low traction to limit the torque to the other wheel. A true limited slip differential works great. I had that on '78 Volvo 264 and I could pull a trailer of horses out a wet pasture just as well, often better, as the 4 wheelers and pickup trucks.
In the mountains you may need real snow tires and 4 wheel drive. But note, that with 4 wheel drive, you can have one wheel spinning in the front and one wheel spinning at the rear and get very little traction. It is NOT hard to get stuck with 4 wheel drive.
