Here's an interesting test. Go to your local dealership and look at the size and type of brakes on the Explorer/Tahoe. Now compare those with the discs on the 9-5.
Notice that the Discs on the 9-5 are bigger? They'll stop you faster.
Sone of the really crappy SUV's I've seen have drum brakes in the rear. You might as well put your feet on the pavement ala Fred Flinstone for as useful as they are.
If your wife is insistent on a SUV you'd do well to look into the car/unibody based models (Ford Escape, Jeep Liberty, Subaru Forester, CRV/Rav-4...) These are much safer in a crash and will also handle better. Very few people actually use a ladder based SUV in its intended way.
Why does your wife want one? is it perceived safety or visibility?
Interesting statistic from a recent new yorker article, 35% of SUV collisions involve head injury, ~2% of minivan collisions involve head injury.
