seat cushion to add some head room.
I think there is one for the 9K, so you might check to see if the dealer knows about this. When I sat in a 9-5 at the dealer recently, I seemed to have about 3 inches of headroom with the seat all the way down. (I'm 6'2", average torso.) A thinner cushion might add another couple inches.
As for the suggestion on the Forester, I rented a non-turbo in Chicago last week and it had loads of head room for me---4 inches anyway and that with the cheap manual seats. Haven't been in a new Outback, but I know I need the power seats in the most recent models to get decent clearance.
