In addition to the poorly configured and overflowing main box (which has necessitated sub boxes once of which is still using fuses as opposed to breakers), there are indications of insufficient current draw such as lights dimming when my furnace fires (though I know this could also be caused by a bad ground). I also have numerous high current units including double oven and separate range, home theater system, furnace etc. In the summer I will be using even more power including central AC, pool (pumps and filters etc.) and the like. We also want to add a hot tub and new electric baseboards in an existing Florida room.
I got an estimate today for an upgrade to 200 amp for $1530. Rather then pay to have an electrian to redo and expand the existing box and then do a service upgrade down the road, it seems the most cost effective approach would be do the upgrade now and have it done once. We do plan on being in our house for at least 7-10 years and it could be much longer (we were fortunate to find a great house with plenty of space and room for expansion).
Thanks for all your input and I would apprecaiate any additional advice.
