On Monday I leased an '04 vert from dealer about 100 miles away. There are two local dealers. Dealer 1 had no cars with AT. Dealer 2 had two in a color I didn't like with $1500 wheels (beautiful and unusual) for which I didn't want to be responsible.
Dealer 2 gave me a good deal on car in stock I said no thanks. He offered to search for car I wanted. Of course the price on car far away was a lot lot higher. Same with Dealer 1. High price for car not in stock. Fine.
Then the faraway dealer called a little out of the blue. I had called them several weeks before and asked for a car without many options. Dealer called on the 31st and offered me a terrific deal on fully loaded car in stock in exactly right color. Great price and dealer said they would take off the '17 wheels. Said they would deliver and I have dealt with them a lot in the past. So I said yes. Now the call.
Sales manager from 2 called and was very polite and wanted to know what I did. Keep in mind that leasing is now gone for '04's so he was done anyway. He thought I bought from 1. When I told him I was going 100 miles he was pretty upset. He said I should have called him and presumably he would have traded for the car, met their price, and stole the sale. He said twice that "I owed it to them to give them a chance to earn my business." My response was that I was not going to go back and forth between the two trying to get the price down. When I originally went in I told every dealer that I knew it was the end of the year, I was looking for a super deal and that if I got it I would buy. I don't think they believed me. Dealer 2 called everyday. Even had the salesperson's son call me to ask about buying my '91 9000.
Sorry for the length but here it is: I know this is the car business and all but the far away dealer came through for me with the perfect car at the perfect price. I didn't feel like scewing them over. I know it will inconvenience me with loaners and all if I don't drive 100 miles. It is also very nice to have a dealer 100 miles away who will deal. Should help next time. Any thoughts? What would you do?
I get my vert tomorrow. This summer when I need service I am kind of looking forward to the 100 miles. Two lane roads all the way through farm country with a few little towns. It could be worse. Thanks.
