Both have lots of models, and they change often. Even the basic models (~ $100) do a good job, but print quality is better on more expensive ones ($200 to $600+). The best quality comes from units that use 6 or 7 ink colors instead of just 4. And using inks described as "archival" means they will last a long time. Epson's DuraBrite inks are excellent and supposedly have longer projected fade resistance than HP's, although either is gonna be fine.

One thing to bear in mind is that inks for photo prints generally tend to work best on paper from the same company. Epson ink/Epson Paper, etc. They will print OK on other brands, but they are actually engineered to work together. I'm a consultant in the digital printing industry and been through the ink, color and paper labs at some of these companies and seen the differences first hand, and tested them personally.

Also, for photo use especially, buy name brand inks. The 3rd party inks are cheaper, but don't last as long and don't always give the best results. I once killed an Epson running Brand X iink, and a Lexmark that was mediocre on Lexmark ink was even worse on off-brand ink. Even Consumer Reports wrote on this in May 2004--which HP made sure I got a copy of .

FWIW, I like Epson because they use piezo print head technology which is more durable and reliable than thermal (which is used by HP, Canon, Lexmark, etc). Ink is slightly less expensive because you only buy ink, not a new print head each time you buy ink. But I'd still buy an HP. I like their 6 color printers a lot.

But still, all these companies are really more in the ink-selling business than the printer business (it's where the profits are), so you will get hosed on ink every time.

There are other issues like whether you print directly from the camera or memory card, or run the image through Photoshop, but that's more than we have room for here.

Have fun.

Noel
