It has been around a long time and for photos it's very good. As long as you can get the dye refills it is a great choice. There can be some compatibility issues with paper, but it is mostly fine.

As others note, ink jet is a major ripoff when it comes to print cost. This will eventually change, but not for a few more years: it's just too lucrative for the printer companies---huge, huge margins. PLus, we are only at the beginning of digital photography. As cams and printers evolve it will all become cheaper. Kodak is in the game, has a lot of cash, superb ink and color technology (I've been in their labs), and we'll see some cool stuff coming out of Rochester. And some of that will be dye sub and we'll see ink prices start to come down. What they have now is only the beginning.

For now, Iuse a $99 Epson and it is fine for text, graphics and photos, but I HATE buying ink for it. I deliberately print most text and stuff off the web in black only and save the color ink for photos--and I only print ones I really want to mount or put in an album. But I'm just as content to have the album exist on a hard drive--with some tunes it makes for a cool slide show out of iPhoto.
