It's really pretty easy. You just have to be willing to appear like the most selfish, self-absorbed person. You have to say you have family, like you mention, in the system and make up that you believe that anyone who has gotten themselves into a court situation, MUST have done something wrong. The judge will ask you a lot of obvious questions that any moron could answer correctly, but you will have to answer incorrectly, like, "If I explain to you how the law works in each and every situation and how it would affect someone who might or might not have done anything wrong, would you still believe they are always guilty?" And you'd have to answer Yes and the other 60 potential jurors, hopefully none of whom you know even though they are all locals, will roll their eyes and snicker a bit.. after ten questions like that, one of the lawyers will dismiss you, but definitely not the judge. The downside is that your name goes back into the pool for selection earlier again anyway.
There is also a way in Cali to re-schedule your jury duty at least once. It is in the accompanying materials - again you're back in the rotation sooner than the normal wait time...
-Scott
