Burned clutches and crunched gears.... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] (#81) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mike Lynch) on Tue, 14 Jun 2005 13:18:20 In Reply to: Manual vs. Sentronic Automatic, js, Mon, 13 Jun 2005 21:57:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
What you can't do with a Sentronic automatic is ever burn the clutch or crunch the gears. A racing driver can get a little more out of a manual.
You're the other side of the pancake so to speak in that you have opposite the normal dilemma. The normal dilemma is for a stick driver to have trouble considering a Sentronic automatic.
In Europe where engines are often smaller and every bit of availible power must be extracted from a car, sticks are the overwhelming preference, though automatics are gaining. In the USA, since the advent of "slapshift" automatics like Sentronic and the like, sticks are getting hard to find. Also modern American cars tend to have an excessive amount of power and are well suited to automatics.
The Sentronic will not allow high rpm downshifting in the lower gears, which is somewhat abusive anyway, and there's a delay or hesitation with a Sentronic that one entirely eliminates with a manual stick shift, but in a practical sense, there's nothing a Sentronic can't do that a manual can.
