In my experience of MTBing in the desert, I have occasionally picked up tiny little thorns from prickly desert vegetation. A very small thorn can implant itself in your tire, prick the tube, causing a slow flat - hard to find, but much easier if you find the leak in the tube and look carefully at the corresponding place in the inside of the tire. Similar story on streets with tiny shards of glass.
