In other words, the prior occupants didn't want to bother to haul it away.
I have a normal freezer-at-the-top design. It works fine for me and is economical. I use the freezer about as often as the fridge, so I like having the freezer at eye level. I get ice out of the freezer for my glass, then water or juice out of the fridge.
Growing up my parents had a side by side, and I thought it was too narrow in each compartment compared to other fridges. You had to take things out to reach in back and risked spilling things if they got caught on your sleeve or elbow. It had an icemaker too. The icemaker stopped working, was repaired, and stopped working again. They are nice when they work, but don't count on trouble free icemaking. When we made homemade ice cream, we would chop ice from outdoors instead of depend on our freezer to produce.
At home now, I make ice in plastic trays and sometimes buy party ice because it is clear and randomly sized. I even have some penguin shaped ice cube trays which are kinda cool.
