overpriced, overhyped, underperforming.
Well, I guess that's not totally true, BMW autos typically outperform their counterparts. Try to find a motorcycle comparison where the BMW doesn't trail the pack. The big touring model does OK against the Goldwing, that's about it.
I have to admit that BMW's are good looking, have great paint jobs and overall finishes, and are very good touring bikes. If I was looking for a two-up bike (not the VFR's strong point), or wanted a bike with more wind protection for winter riding, or just wanted to add a pretty, prestigious bike to my garage, I would look hard at BMW's. The tele-lever is the real deal, the para-lever, no big deal (maybe to shaft drives, but why limit yourself to shaft drives).
X-ring chains will easily last 20,000 miles. Some chain lubes are much better than others at protecting the chain and not creating a mess, but yes, chains are messier than shafts. Is the bike for looking at or riding? And touring bikes are subject to extended riding in the rain. Chains will require considerably more lubing when riding in the rain. That's why I'm glad my bike has centerstand, which all touring bikes should have. Even shaft-drive, since touring implies a chance of a flat out in the middle of nowhere, so you'll have to patch it. Day-to-day commuting, if you can avoid rain, you can go a month between lubes.
There are plenty of BMW's around with very high mileage. But there are plenty with early clutch-spline failures, FI surging (I suspect the newer ones are fine), and complicated (expensive) shaft maintenance procedures.
Good luck chrisx with your choice. If the R's looks overwhelm you, go for it. It should give you many years of enjoyment. I would recommend looking around some, reading up, test riding. Myself, I did thorough research before buying my last new bike, and 6 years later I'm still estatic with the choice.
kinda long, but if you think people get passionate about cars, just start talking about bikes.
oh, and get GOOD riding gear
