Many BMW folks still consider the "oil head" to be the new BMW. The oil heads were introduced in '94 and I think the RT's came along about then, thought the ST was the first "oil head" produced. I've heard of folks with surging issues in older RT's, my vintage '99 and older, lots of jealous air head owners knocking the new oil heads, but mine never did any surging. Personally I think it's ultra-conservative "weenie" riders who experience surging, but who am I to infer how your motorcycle should be ridden?
The later bikes, 1150's and such I don't believe have a surging issue, they've gone to twin plug too, and the new R1200's have twice as many computers to cope, that is an engine management system for each cylinder instead of combined.
The K's are too big, especially the LT, true the weight is held up by the wheels, but I do a lot of poking around neighborhoods, at slow speeds and the light weight of the RT is really welcome. The new R1200's are lighter still.
