It makes a big difference on just what was done, how it was done (arthroscopic surg?) how old you are and what you plan to do with it. If your orthopod did not give you or the therapist specific instructions, go get them. It's a rotator cuff, the combined tendons of the supraspinatus. infraspinatus, and teres major. Some tears are traumatic (eg with a shoulder dislocation) and others are degenerative or from repetitive motion. Your native anatomy can affect it also. Listen to your surgeon.
I'm an orthopedic surgeon who had this done to me. Initial therapy was for pain control, then range of motion, then strength, then activity related. It took about 3-4 days to get over the pain and about 18 mo to throw at 70 mph again. My accuracy is lousy, but everyday use is great.
