I've only been here a little over two years but as near as I can tell there is one new light rail line that goes from nowhere to nowhere. It runs entirely on surface streets and people still commonly have train/car accidents, they took away driving lanes to put the thing in.
Traffic here is bad, but it's nothing like northern NJ where I will never ever live again. Now I'm inside the inner loop and generally work at home if I'm not travelling to a refinery/chem plant some place...so if I'm traveling I'm leaving the city when people are coming in the morning, and the opposite in the evening. If I forget something in the morning I can't even think about turning around to head home because even if I'm only a few miles out-it would take an hour to get back.
People here are fighting to stop another proposed line that would be a little more useful that would run along a large portion of Richmond. Ha ha, fourth largest city in the country and people are actually fighting against a SECOND light rail line...amazing. Truthfully the execution of the first line left a lot to be desired, and I'me sure there are people better qualified to comment than me, but I've ridden it on weekends a few times to grab some drinks downtown and it did work...although it feels more like a tram-car kiddie ride or more similarily like an inter-terminal train in an airport. If they put the new line in I would ride it.
