It is sad to hear complaints about Public Transit. Light Rail on surface streets mixes rail and cars....exclusive Right-of-way is better for train schedules and safety. I see peds, bikes and cars coming around the crossing gates on a daily basis. "rapid" transit is an oxymoron in some cities, but I think it works great in San Francisco, and the Bay Area, with lots of choices from Bus, trolley bus, historic street cars, Light Rail, Heavy Rail, and Amtrak commute service...
I am a fan of public transit, but not of some of the society that use and abuse it. A lack of discipline by rowdy teenagers, keeps some people off systems that could be better with more policing.
One of the drawbacks to public transit is all the politics involved in the choice of equipment, routes, and contractors used. If the city runs the system, (Like San Francisco,) there is more accountability.
On behalf of the transit industry, I apologize for a lack of uniformity like you might find in other parts of the world. The Car is KING here in the US, and the lack of good city trolley systems was caused by people in the industry long ago who wanted to put the trolley systems out of business in favor of GM buses on firestone tires. Google "national city lines antitrust" and read about how GM and others did this.
