Unfortunately, the world we live in does'nt allow us to be naive. It's like that girl who was raped and murdered in NYC a few weeks back, Gullien. A radio show host somehwere recieved all sorts of flack from women's rights groups when he suggested she should have been more prudent in leaving hte bar at 3AM alone. I agree - and it is the same thing with the radar detector. I am defin. not blaming the victim- the guy who stole your detector is a scumbag. However, leaving the car unlocked definitley didn't help the situation.
As another poster said, it could have been worse, still I am sorry for your loss. In the past four years I have had two cars broken into for a total of $1500 in stolen goods, it really sucks esp. when you are in college and that kind of money is a lot. Although my car was locked, so maybe it doesnt help that much if a thief is determined :)
