1. Besides their unique look, what are Saabs known for? What do you like about Saabs?
High technology turbocharged engines, stealthy speed and European handling. My favorite feature is the convertible top. Best in the business.
2. Do they tend to have certain problems I should look for when considering a pre-owned Saab?
Watch out for premature brake wear and mysterious electrical problems. But I'm not experienced in deling with used car issues. I lease 'em, use 'em and turn 'em in.
3. Are parts and service as expensive as BMW and Mercedes? Compared to Japanese cars?
More expensive than Japanese and a little less than BMW and Mercedes. Parts are mostly made in Europe, so watch your euro/dollar exchange rates.
4. Do they have reliability problems? I've mostly driven Japanese cars.
If you are expecting Toyota or Honda reliability, look elsewhere. I think the latest figure I've seen put Saab at about the industry average for new car problems, and I think that is about right.
5. Gas is expensive. What kind of real world mileage can I expect with the 2.0T 210 hp engine assuming I drive sensibly? Does it require premium fuel?
I have a 2006 convertible with auto. trans. driven about 60% city and 40% highway. I average about 23 MPG with premium fuel. I think the requirement for octane (2006 cars) is 90, which is less than premium, but more than mid-grade. My station only charges a 3 cent bump for premium, so I use it, but I'm sure mid-grade would work fine.
6. Any other advice or suggestions are welcome.
I'm in agreement that the amount charged for the V6 engine over the 2.0T is not worth the price for the marginal increase in performance (not just horsepower). A good compromise for you might be a certified used car from Saab.
Good luck in your search,
gatorcpa
