if it's turning itself off immediately, I would suspect the analog/video board, (or power/analog/video board in the later versions), not the logic board. In some iMac models a common hard drive failure can also cause the symptom you're describing. A PCB blows up on the controller board for the hard drive and causes a short. To test that theory, simply unplug the hard drive from power and see if the iMac stays on.
What iMac is it? does the cd slide directly in the front, or is there a tray? If there is a tray, you need parts from an original style imac (233-333Mhz). If slot-loading, you can use parts from the 350-700Mhz versions. The problem is that there are many different versions of the parts you may need. The analog/video board is far more likely than the logic board to cause the symptom you're having, and every generation of Imac has a slightly different version. The only way to know for sure what problem you're having is to minimize the system (remove HD, RAM, etc) and try a known-good logic board.
In short, if it's not the hard drive problem I mentioned above, that mac is probably beyond any type of reasonable repair. Replacing the (P)AV board involves high voltage and I wouldn't recommend it to someone whose technical skills were unknown to me. YMMV of course. _AMG
