Ohhhh, then it is having the os x firmware issue and Ken is absolutely right! Good thing he mentioned it because at this point you don't need any hardware. What you need is to ensure that you have a hard drive that has OS 9.2 or later as well as the iMac 4.1.9 firmware updater (from apple's site). The eaiest way to do this is to take a drive with OS 9 from another computer, or prepare a drive with the use of a working mac. You may also be able to startup from a CD and choose the os 9 partition on the existing hard drive, but this requires a bootable CD with the 'startup disk' control panel, and a lot of luck that the mac will boot from it in its current state.

Ideally:

1.remove current hard drive (HD)
2.install temporary HD with os 9 and firmware update
3.unplug power cord, remove PRAM battery from logic board
4.press the PMU button on the logic board ONCE. (it's a tiny grey or red button near the battery on the logic board, should say 'reset' or 'PMU reset' or 'PMU' silkscreened near the button)
5.wait 2-3 hours (don't ask why this helps)
6.reinstall PMU battery
7. attempt to boot imac, with any luck it will boot fully.
8. RUN THE FIRMWARE UPDATER IMMEDIATELY!

If the mac doesn' boot fully, (turns iself off) repeat steps 3-8.

After the firmware update, you can go back and install os x on the original HD if you want. You should have a minimum of 192MB of RAM, ideally 512MB in my opinion to run X on that machine.

It would honestly be easier if this were just a bad logic board, but you're having a complex issue. Where do you live? If you want, I could send you a bootable CD that might help you fix the imac with the original hard drive. Let me know...AMG
