The point of driving is...

To get from point A to point B quickly, otherwise everyone would be walking! Anywhere is walking distance if you have the time.
Some people are better at "effective commuting" than others. There is aggression, and then there is being on the ball and making progress towards the goal (getting to point B).
As for the point about tailgating, I try to engine brake as much as possible (go back to the dialog about manual transmissions) because I know how annoying a tap-dancing braker can be. Why hit the brakes if engine braking is sufficient and safe to slow your car down. You might be putting a tiny bit more wear on the clutch, but I really doubt it.
My mother-in-law is notorious for tapping the brakes for EVERYTHING, whereas I am a devoted engine-brake practitioner. Her Volvo S60 went through 3 sets of brakes in about 60K whereas I still had the original brakes on my NG900 at 85K... 'nuff said.
