Go with the Mazda 3

My wife bought a Mazda 323 before we were married. Great car that went 150k and 14or so years before being replaced with a 9000 Aero. Both manuals.
We looked first at the Mazda, and I would not hesitate buying another. Fun, stable drive, economical with the gas, and pretty roomy. Also very easy to work on, and parts were easily available. Not that anything much went wrong with it. I think the only thing I replaced was the alternator. Just kept running like a top. Would probably still have it if rust had not taken over.
Oh yeah. It's her car, let her pick it and be happy with it. She'll be more inclined to do the same for you when you want to buy a Saab down the line. I once tried to 'educate' a girlfriend in the qualities of a superior brand, but she really, really wanted- and bought- a dog. Her choice, and she is probably still happy with it. The 3 is no dog. Stand back.
