I completely agree there is a value to be placed on the car; I would just err on the low side.

As far as 'totaling' a car and repairing it there's no telling how bad the car was damaged unless you saw it before it was repaired. Insurance companies can be funny. For example, a few years ago my sister wrecked their Xterra by hitting black ice and rolling the vehicle several times. There was no doubt in my mind the car was totaled; every panel needed to be repaired and nearly all the glass had to be replaced. However, the insurance company decided to have it repaired. Obviously, once it was all said and done, the repairs cost more than the car was worth. Don't know if it was a new claims adjustor or what but in this case he made a mistake and these mistakes happen time and again.

Also, just because the airbags deployed doesn't mean it was a horrible accident. There are a lot of variables that can cause it to activate but again, I would err on the side of caution and assume the worst. Yes, cars can be repaired to like new condition but honestly, that's rarely the case on most cars. Typically the repairs are done by shops who give the lowest quote and could care less about doing things right. This is especially true of a car like a Saturn Ion (or any other 'regular' car). I think a Ferrari or a classic car that will appreciate in value will typically be given a bit more care and attention when it comes to its repair. But an 'everyday car' is simply repaired to _look_ like new. Appearance is usually the number one priority, not structural or safety components. So, in those cases, proceed with caution.

Lets face it, it's a Saturn; how many are out there if this is the car you really want? Even if it were a Saab (or just about anything else), why not buy the best example you can afford even if it requires going with a car that is older or has higher mileage.
