individual companies own discretion. I've been out of the biz for 5 years, however I spent 20+ years working at hotels & 11 of that as a GM.
The national chains with have very good inspection programs. It is always good to do a visual inspection of your room prior to settling in. If something does not look, feel or smell right ask for a different room right a way. Sometimes previous guest are very good at leaving things behind in the darndest places.
As for the electronic room keys, they are the best. The only info on the key is lock related. Each lock stores up to the last 100 transactions. In the event of any questionable event, the manager will get an audit report. The report will tell who was in the room & when. I've used the report to both prove the maid did not enter the room as the guest had claimed & to fire a maintenance worker for stealing.
I really enjoyed working with the Hilton company. I feel they were true Hoteliers.
AmeriSuites on the other hand.....don't get me started.
