Last Friday on one of my favorite roads--Route 8A between Charlemont and Plainfield, MA-- I came upon an accident. It had just happened within the past minute.
I was coming down a hill, heading north toward Charlemont, the road shaded in trees. At the bottom of the hill, out in the sun, the road turned sharp left, a 90 degree bend. Someone was in the middle of my lane, a hundred feet or so ahead, waving their arms. Beyond the person, a motorcycle lay across my lane.
I stopped and got out. The rider, a woman, lay almost perpendicular to the bike, her right arm curled beneath her, her left leg still up on the bike. She was having trouble breathing. There was no cell phone signal, but I knew there was a house not far away.
The guy who'd flagged me down said she'd passed his Jeep and been a few seconds ahead of him heading into the corner, heading in the opposite direction from me. She'd lost it going into the corner and hit the guardrail on the left side of the road and landed in the oncoming lane.
Another car came along and I dispatched the driver to the house I knew of, a 1/2 mile back. He showed up about 3 minutes later with the house's owner, who happened to be an EMT. He said more help was on the way.
I had Jeep guy put his truck further back on the road and to get people slowed down and sent the guy who'd gone for help up the hill to do the same.
While we waited for the ambulance, the EMT and I talked to the woman, got her helmet off and the EMT cut her jacket off to check for other injuries. He thought she had broken ribs, probably a ruptured spleen, probably more. Her breathing wasn't good and she was getting shocky.
The ambulance showed up and they got her loaded up and were meeting a helo not far away for an airlift to a hospital.
I hope the woman is OK.
But ya know, it was about 6 PM on a nice Friday evening. She goes out for a ride, maybe to blow off some steam or relax, she overcooks a corner, totals her bike, and winds up in the hospital. It's an easy thing to have happen.
How many of us have pushed a little harder than we should on a favorite road? I know Rte 8A reasonably well and do tend to push things a bit, but always figure it's OK. Usually it is. Other times it's not.
Kinda makes you back out of the boost a little.
