The smart car appears to fare very well in crash tests. Youtube or other places probably have videos of it crashing into a concrete barrier.
Traditional lead-acid batteries, like the tango uses, are able to be 100% recycled. They are basically lead, plastic, and acid. With the trade-in programs in place, lead acid batteries are one of the most recycled things, percentagewise, that we consume. Too bad they are so heavy and don't have as good a range as the newer options.
As a car enthusiast, I do appreciate the idea of certain purpose cars. I have a sedan for family use, a coupe for personal/sporting use, convertibles for fair weather summer use, van and jeep at work for their chosen purposes, etc.. An efficient vehicle for errands and work travel makes good sense if the benefits are proven and it's affordable and safe.
If plugin hybrids or electric-only went mainstream too quick, we'd have power grid problems like we've never seen. Costs for electricity would skyrocket as supply would not increase as quickly as demand, and we'd all be overpaying for this basic modern necessity. As far as augmenting the electrical supply, solar panels that are twice as efficient or cost half as much are perpetually two year away, and towns everywhere are creating ordinances making it difficult for forward thinking people to erect personal wind generators.
