I've also never understood why non-mainstream cars have to be weird-looking. Maybe because someone thinks all early adopters are geeks and will only buy something that screams, "look at me--I have an ugly car that works different than your normal car!" Then they try to get people to buy something that's fine in concept but would make them feel weird to drive. Duh!
I'm seeing a fair number of hybrid Highlanders and Escapes where I live, some Camrys too. LOTS of Prius, which has the advantage of a hatch, which Toyota has largely abandoned in it's other small cars.
Of course a lot of people think Saabs are not mainstream...so who knows?
