as China and the rest of Asia develop further the demand for just about everything will grow. This puts more pressure on the entire planet.
Some models I've studied factor in population levels and the demand for food, water, land, etc. I don't know what all the input parameters are, but they show population reaching 9.5 to 10 billion around the year 2050 (that's a fairly standard, somewhat conservative projection).
At that point the cat hits the fan and things --including human societies-- start to break down, as the planet doesn't appear able to support that many people. The model accounts for disruptions in climate that could lessen the amount of foodstocks that can be grown/raised, significant drought, and land lost to sea level rises. And it is not a worst case scenario.
I'm normally optimistic, but I fear we have screwed the pooch somewhere along the line and it ain't gonna be pretty over the next few decades.
