As a supplemental source electric heaters are okay, but are best when you're relatively near the heater.
We heat with oil and keep the temps at 68 or lower. But on really cold days I use an oil-filled electric radiator in my 12 x 15 office. It does a decent job and doesn't seem to cost much (although it's impossible to track). My daughter is going to use one in her room (when she's awake) and I have another my wife will use in her studio. Seems a reasonable way to supplement the oil.
FWIW, here in NH there are many houses that used to have electric heat, from back when it was cheap. Many were converted to oil, usually forced hot air. Now people are looking into using the electric systems again, even though our electric rates are all that low.
