Even though the syncros will keep you from damaging the tranny these days, you still wear your clutch significantly more (and often get a bit of serious, and even sometimes dangerous, sudden deceleration) if you don't bring the engine speed up.
You should always strive to rev the engine to the same point it would be at if you were driving in the gear. Any time the engine revs up higher when you let out the clutch, you did it wrong.
