Agreed - there are very few cars now or ever where the lock has anything to do with the latch. They do exist - I believe some high-end cars actually have deadbolts attached to the locking mechanism, but they're few and far between. The only thing a lock might help with is preventing you from inadvertently opening the door as you're flying about the cabin, which I'm sure does happen.
I will say the general controversy on whether car doors should remain locked or unlocked is interesting, however. I for one find it really annoying on modern cars where the doors lock automatically.
