Roger, just went through this on my Olds Alero 3.4V6 (same as Grand Am).
Do not attempt this job until you have a new set of wires on hand. In my case I was eventually able to remove the boots from the plugs, but it left the center connector on the plug instead of coming off with the wire (thus destroying the wire).
Remove the coil packs first to get space. Then you can reach from the brake booster side to get your hand on the boots. You need to turn the boots as much as a full turn to break them loose from the plugs - then while wearing mechanics gloves to save your hands work the boots off the plugs. Once the boots are removed you can reach in there with pliers to take the broken connector off the top of the plug before finally removing the plug.
Give me 4 plugs, DIC, and no wires any day!
