OT: The "Real" cost per mile of car use.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I know the IRS allows 48.5 cents per mile for tax purposes, but I think that includes sunk costs (insurance, depreciation, assumed interest on loan/lease) that are still exist whether the car is driven or parked. Does anyone have access to a pure use number?
The reason I ask is that my empoyers continuing death spiral has resulted in yet another early retirement offer. This will allow me to retire at age 53 with 70% of my age 62 pension. Normal discount for a retirement this early is 49% of the age 62 pension. This may be a deal too good to not accept.
Retiring without another job will save me 2,200 miles per month in commuting miles. At 27 miles per gallon and $3.00 per gallon for premium, this saves me over $250 per month in just fuel. A very real savings that I will immediately see on my charge card statements.
What are the other real savings that will not be immediately apparent, such as tires, oil changes, brakes, delayed maintenance, delayed replacement (at 251K miles this may be significant)?
Does a ready number exist for this? Is assuming these other savings equal the fuel savings realistic?
Thanks in advance.
