Can't help you with Norway, but Sweden & Denmark have a lot to offer.
Copenhagen; Tivoli is a MUST-do. Comparisons to Disneyland aren't so true, but the food (and drink!) is wonderful and the atmosphere is great. Plenty of musical acts, performers, rides (carnival-level, nothing like a Six Flags). Open late in the summer, so plan an evening there.
Also see the Royal Palace. The changing of the guard is fun to watch. DON'T get in their way! :-)
See the little mermaid, walk the shopping streets, take a bus or water tour. Very nice.
Stockholm: So much to see, so little time!
The Vasa museum is amazing. You'd never know (well, ok, you might...) that this ship spend 350 years at the bottom of the Baltic. One of the most popular attractions.
Royal Palace & Gamla Stan (Old Town). Lots of small shops, eateries, churches, architecture dating back to the 1500s. Pretty to see, plenty to do. Also a changing of the guard here.
City Hall (Stadshuset) tour - I finally did this one on my last trip. A beautiful building, not nearly so old as the rest of the city, but plenty of interesting sights. This is where the annual Nobel banquet is held. Also try the walk up to the tower, if you're game.
The main shopping district in downtown, near the Stortorget plaza is also a fine walk.
Drottningholm - the official Royal Residence is a bit outside the city, but accessible by boat, bus or car. Fabulous rooms. See how the royals have lived for 400 years!
Boat tours are very nice, if the weather is good. Bus tours work as well.
In either city, get the local tourist card. The Stockholm card gets you free transit on buses and the T (subway), as well as free or reduced admission to many attractions.
In Trollhattan, seek out SDCC - they seem to get a LOT of surplus parts from Saab. They had a HUGE room at the 2007 meet with an even bigger line... Also see if your trip coincides with the opening of the falls. Very impressive. Go to the Saab museum, and see if the factory tours are open.
In Linkoping is the Swedish Air force (Flygvapnet) museum.
Goteborg is also a very nice city.
As for driving vs training...
Driving is more convenient, BUT parking in most towns, even Trollhattan, is a bear. Parking meters abound, and once you get into a spot, you don't want to leave it! You can prepay in Stockholm for quite a long time, but it's only good for the zone you park in. Its usually not cost effective to buy a train pass for such a short trip. Individual tickets would likely be cheaper. Last trip we had a car that for several days on each end of the trip just sat in a parking space...
Visit a Biltema - Sort of a Pep Boys and Harbor Freight mixed into one... They're all over Scandinavia.
