Depends on traveling speed/style. In 8 days you can see Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo, Norway in a Nutshell, and Helsinki. Others already commented on all but Helsinki. You can take the ferry overnight from Stockholm for two nights (one day in Helsinki, considered the cruise) or stay longer if you like. I ended up there on a holiday so only the state house and outdoor market were open. I walked in all cities, only using city buses on a few occasions.

By September crowds should be gone which makes traveling easier and more enjoyable.

Trains are great, but expensive. I had a pass so it was all free. With a train pass out of peak season you never need a reservation, even for a sleeper (ignore what they tell you regarding the need for a reservation). Peak season, you are lucky to sleep in the baggage car according to the conductors I chatted with. Trains cost a lot, but I don’t know exactly how much since I didn’t pay.

I don’t see any reason to use a car unless you plan to go to off the path places. Maybe just rent for part of the trip.

Stockholm-Oslo train might stop in Trollhattan. You also might be able to go Trollhattan-Copenhagen.

Seems like ideal route would be Norway in a nutshell, then Copenhagen via Trollhattan, then Stockholm, then Helsinki option, then Oslo. That assumes you can deal with sleeping on trains for most of the time. I didn’t use a hotel for the entire Scandinavia portion. The cruise to Helsinki was great as I could use the room as hotel like and shower. Close to midnight sun is sort of neat. On board entertainment is of variable interest. Buffet is overrated, but I tried it once…offers a wide array of fish options.

If you drive, the Oresund Bridge might be interesting to drive across. You get the same view with the train as long as it is daylight.
