What could be worse? Looking out in the driveway, seeing your car sitting there, and wondering whether the next time you want to drive it, it'll take you where you want to go!
Had a phone conversation with my mother last night. This morning, for the 4th time in the 6 months she's owned it, her '06 9-5 with < 50K miles will heading to the shop... on a flatbed. This time it won't start (probably DI or CPS), 2 weeks ago it was coolant loss (heater bypass valve), a month before that the car wouldn't move (stuck e-brake after sitting about 3 weeks), can't remember what the previous issue was.
While her car's in the shop, she'll be driving my brother's Corolla, which in spite of receiving a lot less TLC has never failed to start or run due to a problem other than operator stupidity (dead battery due to leaving lights on). That's in spite of it being 12+ years old and having 200K+ miles on it.
I love Saabs, as does my mother, but there's definitely a price to pay for owning them (other than the large upfront cost) and it can be really frustrating. I think part of what Saab's sales numbers reflect is that most people no longer are willing to accept a serious reliability penalty for a car with a little more character or that performs a little better. There's no doubt that Saab's reliability has improved a lot since the early days, the problem is most other brands have too.
Okay I'll stop ranting now... :^)
