"I think part of what Saab's sales numbers reflect is that most people no longer are willing to accept a serious reliability penalty for a car with a little more character or that performs a little better."
Ever since GM stepped in Saab's luxury feel has taken a tumble in my opinion. The leather has changed to a more plasticky cheaper feeling and smelling leather, the plastics have become harder, and countless little amenities have been deleted. When you're going to run a car (the 9-5) for 12 years it's generally not a good idea to DELETE features from them. If you're not going to spend the money to develop a new car, at least spend the extra $3.00 per car on umbrella holders and rear seat heaters for heaven's sake!
Yes, Saabs are a little less reliable than some of the Toyotas and Hondas out there (although there were BIG improvements in 2004), and while they still have way more character than the aforementioned, there is much less to attract new buyers to the brand than there was 10-15 years ago. I think the NG9-5 should address that though.
