Japanese cars do seem to lack soul or character, but most people don't care about that. And many people I know who buy Japanese blandmobiles do the research and find Subys, Yotas, etc., are a good match for the things *they* think are important. It's an individual thing. For example, you like audio gear, as does my best friend. But the most amazing system imaginable is worth less than $1,000 to to me. So as in most things, it's whatever floats your boat.

I have a friend who collects pre-war MGs (as in pre-WW II). He has an Audi TT for daily use and a Toyota SUV for towing the fastest (and most valuable) of his MGs to vintage races. One day while tearing around the back roads in that car he said the old MGs have character and soul, but that modern cars, even things like a Miata (which he's owned) or a Boxster really do not. He definitely doesn't consider Saabs as having character. Like I said, each to his own.
